I can use the you (singular) and you (plural) forms of 'ser' – 'eres' and 'sois', and of regular -ar verbs in the simple present to talk about work and jobs.
Key learning points
- In Spanish, we use the verb 'ser' to talk about traits, including jobs.
- To say 'you are', use 'eres', and to say 'you all are', use 'sois'.
- The -ity at the end of an English word is often -idad in Spanish, e.g. 'tranquility' - 'tranquilidad'.
- To refer to 'you' for one person with a present tense -ar verb, use the verb ending -as, e.g. 'buscas'.
- To refer to 'you' for two or more people with a present tense -ar verb, use the verb ending -áis, e.g. 'buscáis'.
Words to know
- eres
- part of the verb 'ser' meaning 'you are'
- sois
- part of the verb 'ser' meaning 'you (all) are'
- simple present
- describes habitual events in the present: 'I do'
Common mistakes
In Spanish the ending for 'you singular' and 'you plural' for -ar verbs is the same.
To refer to 'you' for one person with a present tense -ar verb, use the verb ending -as, e.g. 'buscas'; to refer to 'you' for two or more people with a present tense -ar verb, use the verb ending -áis, e.g. 'buscáis'.
For parents, carers and teachers
- The teacher could turn Task A2 into a competitive pair activity by giving each pair a copy of the word list. The first student to find the word wins the round.
