What you’ll learn

I can use 'tiene' with nouns to understand about the belongings someone else has. I can recognise, pronounce and read aloud new words with [ci].

Key learning points

  • Sound-symbol correspondence [ci] sounds different in Spanish and English and benefits from frequent practice.
  • 'tiene' is part of the verb 'tener' and means 'she, he, or it has'.
  • 'tiene' is useful for communicating about the belongings someone else has. For example, 'tiene una bicicleta'.

Words to know

[ci]
sound-symbol correspondence
tiene
Spanish verb meaning ‘she, he, it has’ and just 'has'

Common mistakes

Spanish verbs always need pronouns, like in English ,to convey the person doing the action.

Spanish verbs don't always need pronouns. When 'tiene' follows a name or noun it just means 'has'. Otherwise 'tiene' refers to the 'she', 'he' or 'it' that is the subject of the sentence and means 'she, he, it has'.

For parents, carers and teachers
  • To make the most of short read aloud activities, teachers may consider a solo-duo-ensemble cycle whereby pupils say the words three times: once to themselves, once to a partner and once all together.
