What you’ll learn

I can use the conditional, 'hätte' and 'wäre' to say what I would like to do in future.

Key learning points

  • To talk about something something you would or might do, use 'würd-' to mean ‘would’ and an infinitive verb at the end.
  • Use 'gern' and 'lieber' with 'würde' to talk about what we would like or would prefer to do.
  • To say 'would have', use 'hätte'.
  • To say 'would be', use 'wäre'.

Words to know

würd-
form of 'werden' meaning 'would', used with a 2nd infinitive to express a conditional idea
hätte
imperfect subjunctive form of 'haben' meaning ‘would have’
wäre
imperfect subjunctive form of 'sein' meaning ‘would be’
conditional
grammar structure expressing what you would do or what might happen in the future

Common mistakes

Use 'würd-' whenever you want to say 'would'.

'Würd-' works for very many cases and is easy to remember because it sounds like the English 'would'. But 'haben' and 'sein' are important exceptions, especially in spoken German. 'Hätte' means 'I would have' and 'wäre' means 'I would be'.

For parents, carers and teachers
  • Encourage lots of practice in writing and speaking with the core structure with 'würd-' and contrasting sentences with 'ich würde gern' and 'ich würde lieber'. For Task B1, teachers may prefer to provide item-by-item feedback and can easily re-order these slides for this option.
