Key learning points
- Use your knowledge of French sounds to carefully write down what you hear. Check spelling carefully.
- After dictation, use your knowledge of grammar to check what you've written makes sense.
- Before you listen, use the English title and words provided to predict which French words you might hear.
Words to know
- prediction
- strategy that involves anticipating what the answers might be by listing relevant French words or phrases
Common mistakes
I can only prepare for the listening exam by learning vocabulary and grammar.
While a strong grasp of grammar and excellent recall of vocabulary is essential, there are also strategies to help students achieve success in the listening exam. Prediction of words and phrases is one method to actively engage with listening.
For parents, carers and teachers
- Teachers can select the appropriate level of listening tasks for their students, however, listening to all tasks is also useful for vocabulary revision.
