What you’ll learn

I can confidently complete two parts of the Spanish speaking exam: read aloud and photo description.

Key learning points

  • Using a checklist before a read-aloud task is a powerful and effective strategy.
  • In a read-aloud task, think carefully about how to correctly pronounce the letters in each word and spot tricky sounds.
  • Considering cognates and mentally rehearsing the text are key steps in preparation for a read-aloud task.
  • The PALM acronym is a useful tool to describe photos using a range of information.

Words to know

sound-symbol correspondence
relationship between letters and their sounds
PALM
acronym for photo description (people and objects, action, location, mood)
verb clause
a piece of information that contains a subject and a verb

Common mistakes

I should keep my answers to the follow-up questions after the photo description short without extra detail.

You need to try and develop your answers to the follow-up questions with at least 3 verb clauses.

For parents, carers and teachers
  • Brainstorming questions before tackling a conversation on a given theme is a step often missed out by students. If they do this regularly in class, it will also help them to anticipate possible questions in the speaking exam.
