What you’ll learn
I can contribute to and participate in the planning and leading of an inclusive tournament.
Key learning points
- Move: taking a deep breath before throwing or serving relaxes the body and helps to maintain accuracy under pressure.
- Think: officiating with integrity and without bias in a tournament prevents conflict occurring.
- Feel: prioritising sporting behaviour over outcome can help to regulate emotions in competitive situations.
- Connect: having a metric for success that every participant is able to achieve encourages a greater sense of inclusion.
Words to know
- tournament
- a series of competitive events or matches where teams or individuals compete against each other
- metric for success
- the chosen method of what is deemed to be desirable in the tournament, such as, improving skills, achieving personal bests and demonstrating sporting behaviour
- sporting behaviour
- the practice of fair play, respect and graciousness towards opponents, teammates and officials
Common mistakes
All tournaments must focus solely on the outcome/winner of competition.
In order for all participants to feel included, tournaments can take many forms and be adapted so that everyone can enjoy an appropriate level of challenge.
For parents, carers and teachers
- View the tournaments from the perspective of the least confident/experienced pupils and encourage adaptations to be made to include them. You may want to make some decisions about the focus of this lesson during the plenary of the previous lesson to maximise tournament time.
