What you’ll learn
I can demonstrate a good understanding of batting and fielding in a game of cricket.
Key learning points
- Move: striking the ball with intent towards spaces, helps us to score more runs when batting.
- Move: accurate throwing, catching and retrieving skills are important when fielding to keep the batters score low.
- Think: reflecting on our performance and adapting tactics is important when batting and fielding to win the game.
- Feel: helping our teammates make decisions within the game shows we understand the importance of responsibility.
- Connect: encouraging our team mates when they make mistakes shows excellent teamwork.
Words to know
- batting
- when a player uses a bat to try to hit a ball that is thrown or bowled to them.
- fielding
- when players on the team that is not batting try to catch or stop the ball and get the batters out.
- game
- an activity or sport in which people compete with each other according to agreed rules.
Common mistakes
Pupils hold the bat and attempt to strike the ball using just 1 hand, like they would in similar sports, such as rounders.
Ensure pupils understand that this approach can lead to a lack of control, making it difficult to play different shots. A correct 2 handed grip is essential for balance, precision and better shot execution.
For parents, carers and teachers
- Paper cups work well as batting tees if you do not have this piece of equipment available.
