What you’ll learn

I can use word reference resources to support my language learning journey.

Key learning points

  • The SSC [que] is pronounced as in the word '¿por qué?' and [qui] as in the word 'equipo'.
  • Guessing the meaning is not a reliable strategy for most Spanish words.
  • In a paper dictionary, words are listed in alphabetical order.
  • An online dictionary gives us the meaning(s) of the word, its word class, examples of usage, and pronunciation.
  • Both dictionaries give us the word class using abbreviations - often in italics and sometimes in a different colour.

Words to know

que
pronounced as in '¿por qué?'
qui
pronounced as in 'equipo'

Common mistakes

I can guess the meaning of the words I don't know just by looking at them.

Guessing the meaning is not a reliable strategy for most words in Spanish as it may lead to misunderstanding, especially for tricky or abstract vocabulary.

For parents, carers and teachers
  • The teacher might want to show students how an online dictionary works by demonstrating the process on screen.
