What you’ll learn

I can use the 'tú' and 'vosotros' forms of regular -er and -ir verbs to understand teachers talking to me and my classmates about school life.

Key learning points

  • To refer to 'you (singular)' simple present -er verbs, use the verb ending -es, and for 'you (plural)' use -éis.
  • The modal verbs 'querer', 'poder', 'deber' and 'soler' are often followed by an infinitive.
  • To refer to 'you (singular)' with simple present -ir verbs, use the verb ending -es, and for 'you (plural)' use -ís.
  • To say 'your' for two or more people, use 'vuestros' + masculine nouns and 'vuestras' + feminine nouns.

Words to know

simple present
describes habitual events in the present, e.g. 'I do'
-er verbs
a verb whose infinitive form ends in -er
-ir verbs
a verb whose infinitive form ends in -ir

Common mistakes

The plural 'you' form is the same for both -er and -ir verbs.

To talk to more than one person ('you all') using -er verbs in the present tense, use the ending -éis, e.g. 'comprendéis' - 'you all understand'. For -ir verbs, use the ending -ís, e.g. 'escribís' - 'you all write'.

For parents, carers and teachers
  • Instead of dividing Task A1 into two rounds, the teacher could present all the words on a single page and ask students to translate them all at once. Equally, the teacher might adjust the timing or any other conditions of the task to meet the needs of their class.
