I can use a variety of vocabulary and structures to talk about a festival in the Hispanic world.
Key learning points
- To form the present continuous, use 'estar' and a verb in the present participle (-ando, -iendo).
- In Spanish, there are two ways to say ‘to be’. Use ser with permanent traits and estar with location, states and moods.
- Extended reading texts can be exploited to enrich our thematic vocabulary and use of complex structures.
- It is important to communicate accurately but also to include varied and complex language.
- It is helpful to reference popular customs and celebrations in different Hispanic countries in this topic.
Words to know
- estar
- verb 'to be, being' used for location, states and moods
- present continuous
- describes events happening right now: 'I am doing'
- present participle
- verb form that forms the present continuous, together with the auxiliary verb 'estar'
- ser

Common mistakes
'She, he is doing' translates as 'es haciendo' in Spanish.
'She, he is doing' is 'está haciendo'. To form the present continuous, use 'estar' and a verb in the present participle (-ando, -iendo).
For parents, carers and teachers
- Support can be provided through the model text included in Task C1. Encourage students to use this as a model. This is also a great opportunitiy to encourage students to curate their own topic-spcific vocabulary and structures related to the festivals they find more interesting.
