Key learning points
- When describing a photo, use the acronym PALM. It stands for People, Action, Location, Mood. Add your own opinions too.
- A well-developed response in conversation has at least three verb clauses.
- Extend your answers by using a different tense, a different subject, or opinions and reasons.
Words to know
- PALM
- an acronym to summarise what to include in a photo description: People, Action, Location, Mood
- verb clause
- part of a sentence that contains a subject and a verb
Common mistakes
Like in a role-play, I should keep my answers short and concise in a conversation.
Conversation answers following the picture task should be developed and extended with at least three verb clauses.
For parents, carers and teachers
- Brainstorming questions before tackling a conversation on a given theme is a step often missed out by students. Encourage students to do this before Task C1. This will also help them to anticipate possible questions in the speaking exam and use their preparation time to the full.
