Key learning points
- It is important to have a firm knowledge of sound-symbol correspondance to transcribe spoken German in a dictation.
- The most important thing for successful listening is a secure knowledge of vocabulary.
- As well as a broad vocabulary, prediction and being aware of distractors and synonyms are useful listening strategies.
Words to know
- SSC
- sound-symbol correspondence
- prediction
- strategy that involves anticipating what the answers might be by listing German words or phrases
- synonym

- distractor
- incorrect but plausible answer option in reading / listening tasks, designed to test your attention to detail
Common mistakes
I can rely on strategies like prediction and avoiding distractors to successfully complete all listening comprehension questions.
Whilst strategies such as prediction and avoiding distractors are very helpful, the single most important factor in successfully answering listening questions is having a secure knowledge of vocabulary.
