Key learning points
- Manipulating present, past and future verbs allows you to tell a story and describe events clearly and accurately.
- Being able to switch between tenses helps to make your writing and speaking more interesting.
- When describing a photo, use the acronym PALM. It stands for People, Action, Location, Mood.
- It is helpful to predict follow-up questions on a theme for developing conversation after describing a photo.
Words to know
- PALM
- acronym to summarise what to include in a photo description: People, Action, Location, Mood
Common mistakes
When developing a conversation about future travel plans, it is important to consistently use the future time frame in answers.
Whilst it is important to be able to refer to the future confidently, it is also helpful to add in different time frames to give more detail as well as opinions.
For parents, carers and teachers
- Repeating speaking activities such as the photo description and conversation again immediately, once or more times, will help improve fluency and deepen knowledge.
