What you’ll learn

I can pass and move the ball accurately and create simple tactics for creating space and keeping possession.

Key learning points

  • Move: moving quickly at an angle to create space and putting our hands up shows we are ready to receive the pass.
  • Think: knowing that moving quickly into space creates space, enables us to create tactics to keep possession.
  • Think: making effective decisions during the game about where to pass and move enables our team to keep possession.
  • Feel: ensuring everyone on the team is motivated and understands why we should try our best requires integrity.
  • Connect: cooperating in teams and encouraging each other enables us to apply simple tactics to keep possession.

Words to know

tactics
plans you create and use to try to win or succeed
creating space
making room around you so you or your team can pass and move successfully
possession
the team in control of the ball

Common mistakes

Pupils think that once they have moved into a space, they can stay still and wait for the ball to come to them.

Pupils must be reminded to keep moving, creating angles for passes to the sides of their opposition. If they stand still, it makes it really easy for the defender to mark them.

For parents, carers and teachers
  • Vary the context that pupils apply their learning through. Start with the practice task and drip feed the explanation in throughout.
