What you’ll learn
I can perform and link together a range of vaults over obstacles showing control and fluidity.
Key learning points
- Move: linking step vaults and lazy vaults smoothly requires technical skill, body control and awareness.
- Move: vaults are performed with a fluid, smooth and continuous motion.
- Think: being confident performing step vaults and lazy vaults is essential before attempting a thief vault.
- Feel: resilience is built through attempting skills you've never tried before and embracing challenges.
- Connect: minimising risks using constructive feedback and teamwork enhances technique.
Words to know
- vault
- a technique used to quickly and efficiently clear an obstacle, typically by using the hands to assist the body over it
- thief vault
- a dynamic and smooth movement used to pass an obstacle quickly by enabling a smooth exit and carrying speed
- fluid
- a style of motion that is smooth, continuous and efficient, without unnecessary pauses or jolts
Common mistakes
Pupils often take-off with the wrong foot when performing the thief vault or they take-off too close to the obstacle.
Work on take-off in isolation, focusing on taking-off with the outside foot and ensuring there is enough space between them and the obstacle to ensure continued flow through the vault.
For parents, carers and teachers
- Do not attempt the thief vault unless pupils are competent in the step vault and the lazy vault. If pupils lack confidence, revisit the year 6 parkour unit prior to accessing these lessons.
