What you’ll learn

I can describe family behaviours and events using a range of adjectives, ensuring adjective agreement with nouns.

Key learning points

  • To make an adjective feminine we can: add -e, -x to -se, -el to -elle, -en to -enne, -f to -ve, -er to ère.
  • If an adjective ends in mute -e, there is no change to form the feminine e.g. 'triste'.
  • To form plural adjectives we add an -s, unless the adjective ends in -x or -s. -al and -eau change to -aux and -eaux.
  • [è] sounds like 'tête', important when pronouncing feminine agreements of adjectives ending in -er: 'entier', 'entière'.

Words to know

singular verb form
when you talk about something one person is doing: I, you, her or she
adjective
a word that gives information about a noun
noun
a word for a person, place or thing

Common mistakes

Adjectives ending in -al take -s to create the masculine plural form.

Adjectives ending in -al need a spelling change to create the masculine plural form. Remove the -l and add -ux for example 'familial' - 'familiaux' in the masculine plural form.

For parents, carers and teachers
  • Task B3 has two versions: option 1 and option 2. Option 1 is a more challenging version of the translation. Option 2 is aimed at students who may find option 1 too challenging.
