What you’ll learn
I can explore how to use my body to jump as far as possible.
Key learning points
- Move: to jump as far as possible we should swing our arms back when crouching and then forwards when we jump.
- Move: we stand with our feet shoulder width apart, knees bent and drive our legs to generate power and jump further.
- Think: it is important not to fall backwards when we land, as we measure the jump from the nearest point of landing.
- Feel: trying different ways to improve our technique to jump further shows excellent resilience and self motivation.
- Connect: evaluating our partners when jumping, providing them with feedback on their technique helps them jump further.
Words to know
- jump
- use your legs to push off the ground and get some air before landing back down
- power
- the ability to use force to jump a greater distance
- technique
- the method we use to perform a task
Common mistakes
When building up to the jump, the pupil steps forward slightly, jumping off 1 foot.
Explain to pupils that jumping off 1 foot or stepping forwards before jumping is a foul. They must jump and land using both feet.
For parents, carers and teachers
- Ensure that the surface pupils are jumping onto is not slippery. When pupils land, it is important that they can plant their feet without slipping - remind them tolean forward. In cycle 1, allow pupils to explore different techniques, before explaining the most effective jumping technique.
