Key learning points
- [äu] is an important sound symbol correspondence, used often in noun plurals; for example, 'Häuser'.
- 'Wie viele ...?' means 'How many ...?'.
- Knowing noun genders well is key to applying German plural noun rules 1 to 4 correctly.
- Place a question word directly in front of the verb to change a closed question into an open one.
Words to know
- [äu]
- pronounced [äu] as in 'Mäuse'
- wie viele?
- how many?
- plural
- more than one
Common mistakes
All plurals are formed in the same way.
Nouns have different rules for plurals depending on their gender and spelling.
For parents, carers and teachers
- Remind learners that there is only one present tense in German, whereas English has two.
