I can use cognates and time frames to understand texts about health issues and take part in a role play about healthy living.
Key learning points
- Cognates are words that have the same meaning and look the same or very similar to English words.
- Cognates are very useful in reading tasks, as they can help us to quickly identify the overall theme of a text.
- We can use adverbs of time and verb tenses to distinguish between past, present and future actions and events
- In a role play, you are required to say a short phrase in response to each prompt.
- In a role play, it is important to include at least one verb in each phrase. You must also ask one question.
Words to know
- cognate
- word with the same meaning and same or similar spelling in English and German
- time frame
- a period of time during which something happens; refers to present, past or future
- role play
- a task with a situation and prompts to ask and answer questions, simulating a conversation
Common mistakes
The present tense in German can only be used to refer to the present.
The present tense can also be used with appropriate adverbs of time to refer to the near future, e.g., 'Am Samstag spiele ich Tennis.'.
For parents, carers and teachers
- As a follow-on to completing the role play task in pairs, students might enjoy creating their own role play prompts within the context of the lesson. Higher candidates could also add a bullet point requiring the past tense.
