What you’ll learn

I can distinguish between past and present in the context of life at home.

Key learning points

  • To conjugate plural forms of -ar verbs in the simple present, remove the -ar and add -amos, -áis, -an.
  • To conjugate plural forms of -ar verbs in the preterite, remove the -ar and add -amos, -asteis, -aron.
  • Verb endings and time markers can help us to distinguish between past and present time frames in Spanish.

Words to know

simple present
verb tense used to describe habitual actions in the present, e.g. 'I speak'
preterite
verb tense used to express completed actions in the past, e.g. 'I spoke'

Common mistakes

The only translation of 'hablamos' is 'we speak'.

The ending -amos also corresponds to the 1st person plural form of the preterite for -ar verbs. Therefore, 'hablamos' can also mean 'we spoke'. The context of the verb should clarify which is the correct translation.

For parents, carers and teachers
  • Learning Cycle 1 contains some Higher-tier vocabulary, but could be easily adapted to suit Foundation-tier students.
