Key learning points
- Some verb forms contain orthographic changes. These are spelling changes made to preserve or aid pronunciation.
- Some -er / -ir verbs with ‘g’ in the stem change to 'j' in the 1st person singular to preserve the soft [g] sound.
- Verbs ending in -uir gain a 'y' in persons 1,2,3 and 6 to aid pronunciation.

Common mistakes
The 1st person singular form of 'influir' is 'influo'.
The verb 'influir' does not follow the normal pattern of -ir verbs. Verbs ending in -uir gain a 'y' in persons 1,2,3 and 6 to aid pronunciation. As such, the 1st person singular forms of 'influir' is 'influyo'.
