What you’ll learn

I can use correct word order, including after a wide range of conjunctions, and take part in a picture task in the context of popular culture.

Key learning points

  • Word order 1 is the standard word order: subject-verb-object. Use WO1 after conjunctions 'und', 'oder', 'aber', 'denn'.
  • Word order 2 (inversion) is when subject and verb swap position so the verb is always the second idea in the sentence.
  • Word order 3 (subordination) is when the verb is sent to the end of the clause. Use WO3 after some conjunctions.
  • Use WO3 after: 'weil', 'obwohl', 'dass', 'wenn', 'ob', 'da', ‘bevor’, ‘als’, ‘nachdem’, ‘sobald’ and ‘falls’.
  • When describing a photo, use the acronym PALM. It stands for People, Action, Location, Mood. Add your own opinions too.

Words to know

word order one (WO1)
subject-verb-object; the standard word order in a German sentence
word order two (WO2)
inverts the subject and verb in a sentence
word order three (WO3)
after certain conjunctions, the verb is sent to the end of the sentence or clause

Common mistakes

All conjunctions cause the verb to be sent to the end of the clause.

Subordinating conjunctions, such as 'weil', 'dass', 'ob' and 'obwohl' send the verb to the end of the clause. Coordinating conjunctions, such as 'und', 'aber', 'denn' and 'oder' are followed by word order 1 (standard subject-verb-object word order).

For parents, carers and teachers
  • The picture task in the exam will be followed by conversation on the broader theme. Practice for this part of the exam, following on from the photos used in this lesson, is available in lesson 3 of this unit, in the cycle called 'Charting confident conversations'.
