What you’ll learn

I can interpret past, present and future time frames in reading comprehension questions about 'los Nuyoricans'.

Key learning points

  • You can use adverbs of time and verb tenses to interpret time frames in reading comprehension tasks.
  • In Spanish, the strong vowels are [a], [e] and [o]. These are always fully pronounced and don't glide into other sounds.
  • The stress in Spanish words ending in a vowel, 'n' or 's' falls on the penultimate syllable.
  • The stress in Spanish words ending in a consonant, excluding 'n' and 's', falls on the final syllable.
  • Words that break the rules of stress in Spanish pronunciation indicate where the stress should fall with an accent.

pronouncing one syllable more heavily than other syllables in a word

Common mistakes

In Spanish, 'mañana' always means 'morning'.

In Spanish 'mañana' has two meanings. It can mean 'morning' or 'tomorrow'.

For parents, carers and teachers
  • Learning Cycle 3 contains Higher Tier content. When demonstrating the pronunciation of strong vowels, it is a good idea to emphasise the open mouth position required.
