I can understand, ask and answer questions about after-school experiences in past and present tenses.
Key learning points
- To form the singular preterite persons of -er and -ir verbs, we take the infinitive, remove –er/-ir and add endings.
- The -er and -ir singular preterite endings are: -í (I), -iste (you), -ió (she, he, it).
- In conversation it is important to listen carefully to and understand the tense of questions before answering.
- Being able to ask questions in different tenses, as well as answer them, is key to successful communication.
Words to know
- preterite tense
- a tense used for events completed in the past
Common mistakes
As long as I get the gist of the meaning of a Spanish question, I can answer successfully.
In conversation it is important to listen carefully to the tense of questions before answering. Otherwise your answers might not be relevant. For example, 'What did you do after school yesterday?' 'I usually do my homework.'
For parents, carers and teachers
- Pupils often trip up in conversational interactions because they lack practice in understanding unplanned questions. It is worth pupils spending ample time across the secondary phase practising understanding as well as responding to unprepared questions, giving relatively short but clear answers.
