I can use a range of strategies to improve understanding in listening tasks and ask and answer questions in a shopping role-play scenario.
Key learning points
- A strong knowledge of high frequency vocabulary is key to unlocking effective listening comprehension.
- Prediction involves anticipating what the answers might be by generating relevant words in Spanish.
- Recognising synonyms often involves identifying specific examples of a more general category, e.g. 'manzana' - 'fruta'.
- Identifying and avoiding distractors is key to ensuring we don’t jump to the wrong conclusions during listening tasks.
- In a role-play scenario, you have to ask as well as answer questions.
Words to know
- prediction
- strategy that involves anticipating what the answers might be by listing relevant Spanish words or phrases
- synonym
- word that has the same or very similar meaning as another word
- distractor
- incorrect but plausible answer option in listening tasks, designed to test your attention to detail
Common mistakes
The only factor in understanding listening tasks is vocabulary. If I know enough words, I don’t need any strategies to comprehend what I hear.
A strong knowledge of high frequency vocabulary is key to unlocking effective listening comprehension. However, strategies such as prediction, synonym recognition and identifying distractors can also improve listening skills.
For parents, carers and teachers
- Students can adapt their role-play to a different type of shop, such as a clothing store, a bakery, or a pharmacy. This variation encourages them to use a wider range of vocabulary. Teachers can also challenge students to add a new element, like asking for recommendations or negotiating a price.
