What you’ll learn

I can use 'obwohl' with correct word order, along with a wide range of health-related vocabulary, and take part in a role-play scenario at the doctor's.

Key learning points

  • The conjunction 'obwohl', meaning 'although', triggers word order 3, sending the verb to the end of the clause.
  • If 'obwohl' starts the sentence, use verb-comma-verb word order when linking to the next clause or sentence.
  • 'Obwohl' can be used to develop and extend ideas by linking two sentences together.
  • In a role-play, you are required to say a short phrase in response to each prompt.
  • You must include at least one verb in each role-play answer, and you have to ask at least one question.

Words to know

obwohl
conjunction meaning 'although' which triggers word order 3
word order 3 (WO3)
after certain conjunctions, the verb is sent to the end of the sentence or clause
role-play
a task with a situation and prompts to ask and answer questions, simulating a conversation

Common mistakes

The conjunction 'obwohl' has the same effect on word order whether it starts the sentence or a second clause in a sentence.

The conjunction 'obwohl' always triggers word order 3 in a clause. However, if the sentence starts with the 'obwohl' clause, we then use the verb-comma-verb rule, meaning the second clause starts with the verb.

For parents, carers and teachers
  • Edexcel role-plays address the candidates using 'Sie' and are set in formal transactional scenarios, as in Task C1. Teachers preparing students for AQA might wish to adapt the role-play teacher prompts to the 'du' form and adapt the question in the final prompt to suit an informal conversation.
