What you’ll learn

I can accurately throw the ball underarm towards a target, knowing why this is important.

Key learning points

  • Move: throwing underarm requires stepping forwards with one foot and releasing the ball with the other hand.
  • Think: concentrating and looking towards the target before throwing the ball will increase accuracy.
  • Feel: counting the scores accurately and helping others to keep score demonstrates honesty.
  • Connect: encouraging your partner when they are aiming for a target shows fairness.

Words to know

throwing
using your hand to send a ball through the air to a specific target or area
target
an object you are aiming for
accuracy
the ability to control where we throw an object

Common mistakes

Pupils grip the object too hard and hold onto it too long, releasing it too late.

Encourage pupils to use a relaxed grip for better control. Model to pupils the correct timing for releasing the object for greater accuracy.

For parents, carers and teachers
  • Cycles 1 and 2 will benefit from pupils working in mixed ability groups, whereas cycle 3 will work best with pairs being closer to the same ability. Having the pupils shout, 'swing, step, throw' as they throw, can help them with the technique.
