What you’ll learn

I can ask and answer questions in a role-play scenario at a restaurant, using new food vocabulary and accurately incorporating partitive articles, indefinite articles, y and en.

Key learning points

  • French cuisine is celebrated for its wide array of dishes and foods, many of which are famous around the world.
  • 'y' and 'en' are often used in speech to replace a group of other words.
  • Y means 'there' or '(to, about, in) it'. En means '(of) it/them'. When used together, 'y' comes before 'en'.
  • In formal role-plays, it is important to be able to understand formal speech, including 'vous' verbs and 'votre'.

Words to know

y
indirect object pronoun meaning ‘there’ and '(to, about, in) it'
en
indirect object pronoun meaning 'of it/them' used to replace 'de + noun'.
role-play
a task with a situation and prompts to ask and answer questions, simulating a conversation
vous
polite 'you'

Common mistakes

It doesn't matter if you address a stranger in France as 'tu' or as 'vous'.

Using the correct register of address is very important for students. Practising role-plays in both formal and informal settings allows students to understand when to use the appropriate form of 'you'.

For parents, carers and teachers
  • There are two versions of the role-play in LC3. Option 1 is a higher level role-play. Option 2 is a foundation level role-play. Option 1 is included in the video.
