What you’ll learn

I can recognise regular verbs in the infinitive and singular persons, use reference materials to identify unknown words, and translate accurately from German to English.

Key learning points

  • [ch] is a hard sound after a, o, u and au, and soft after other sounds.
  • The infinitive form of a verb is found in the dictionary and usually ends in 'en'.
  • Singular persons of regular (weak) verbs in the present tense can be recognised by the endings -e, -st or -t.

Words to know

[ch]
pronounced soft as in 'ich' or hard as in 'Buch'
infinitive
the dictionary form of a verb which gives its general meaning
word order
the order of words in a sentence

Common mistakes

Word order is the same in German and English.

Word order is not always the same in German and English. Pay close attention to the position of different sentence parts (subject, verb, nouns, adverbs).

For parents, carers and teachers
  • Task A2 could be completed as a whole class oral activity to practise spelling in German and 'Wie schreibt man...?', or for a harder task, remove some more of the letters.
