I can use verbs like ‘entendre’ in the present tense singular to communicate with a penfriend.
Key learning points
- Open [eu/œu] is pronounced as in 'cœur'.
- Closed [eu] is pronounced as in 'deux'.
- 'Répondre' is followed by the preposition 'à' in French, 'dépendre' is always followed by 'de'.
- ‘Entendre’ is an -re verb. Verbs like ‘entendre’ follow the same pattern as verbs like ‘prendre’ in the singular forms.
Words to know
- open [eu/œu]
- sound-symbol correspondence pronounced as in 'cœur'
- closed [eu]
- sound-symbol correspondence pronounced as in 'deux'
- -re verb
- a verb whose infinitive form ends in -re
Common mistakes
Prepositions with the verbs 'depend' and 'reply' in English work the same way as prepositions with 'dépendre' and 'répondre' in French.
'Depend' is followed by 'on' in English and 'dépendre' by a form of 'de' in French. 'Répondre' is always followed by a form of 'à' in French whereas in English it can be translated as 'reply to' but also with 'answer', where there is no preposition.
For parents, carers and teachers
- It's good to underline the importance of correct pronunciation in this lesson. Children like the challenge of 'sounding French' and applying the rules regarding open and closed sounds helps this. Task C3 could be differentiated to students just writing the pronoun + verb rather than full sentences.
